A Harley Davidson motorcycle is a type of bike that has years of prestigious reputation in the motorcycling world, and could be considered one of the kings of the road as far as two wheelers are concerned.

The early models, developed by the founders of the Company of the same name, developed their own individual design handwriting and made the Harvey Davidson motorcycle distinctive from any other. That is not to say, in later years, it did not start to copy and use other designer’s influences, and did not just solely concentrate on the 750 cc and upwards monsters that many seem to think.
After the war, as part of the repatriation measures, Harley Davidson motorcycles were endowed with the rights of a German cycle company and went in to producing the famous Hummer, a much smaller motorbike that was later copied by BSA in the form of the Bantum. Prior to this, at the request of the Us military, Harley had copied many features from the BMW makers.

All this was a major change in status for the Company which was once one of the major pioneers, or one of the first producers, to introduce new ideas. In 1922, for example, it launched the mammoth 1200 cc V engine bike.
Three years later saw the unveiling of the famous tear drop-shaped gasoline tank which proved to be a huge success and continued down the decades as a major identity feature. In 1928, Harley introduced its first bike with front breaks.
As in most fields of fashion, further stimulus and inspiration is sometimes needed to inject new ideas and designs. One of the Company’s major acquisitions in its history was the acquisition of a 505 share in the Italian Aermacchi company. This gave it an instant foothold in the 250 cc category and the Harley Davidson Sprint models entered production. In 1965 was added the M65 Mermacchi model of 125 cc and later the famous Rapido. Harley was later to sell their shareholding and revert back to their more traditional product areas.
Recently they have designed a bike specifically aimed at the European market which is racier and does not have the heavier trappings of the more traditional Harley Davidson motorcycle.
This is a genuine move to counterbalance its reliance on its main signature bikes and offset the reliance also on the US economy which had witnessed some traumatic times of late.
Many ardent enthusiasts around the world will hope that this household name in the motorcycle world can go on for another century. It has stood the tests of time, competition and takeovers, and is the Longest established large scale motorcycle manufacturer in the world. It continues to receive accolades from enthusiasts everywhere and long may this be so.
